The school subject is: Translational pain research: from lab to clinic
Recent advances in pain research enable us to see pain as a disease of its own. In addition, we have learned with modern methods that pain alters the entire nervous system, including transduction and the emotional and cognitive responses. Although pain driven neuroplasticity remains a useful research tool, it is insufficient for filling the gap between biomedical discovery and clinical benefit. Discoveries made at the laboratory’s research bench usually have little relevance or application for patients suffering pain. Translating basic scientific findings into the clinical pain research can improve treatments for patients, increase our understanding of pain mechanisms, as well as provide new possibilities for designing successful clinical trials. This is the core of medical research today and this will be the topic of the school. Four days lectures, workshops, student’s presentations will be aimed at exploring the mechanisms and tools for deciphering maladaptive plasticity mechanisms at the origin of chronic pain. Informal, lively discussions will be organized to view possible targets and research strategies for developing curative/preventive treatments allowing the patients to improve their quality of life.
We offer two types of students activity during the school:
The first is to deliver a short presentation (slides 3-5) with the current research issues or on the difficulties in the translation of scientific knowledge for therapy in the clinic. Presentations will be the topic for discussion. These presentations will take place after the lectures in the morning and during the afternoon sessions. The second type of activity is “tutoring”, where interested students are welcome to have an individual tutoring session, which could take place in the evening after dinner. This should be announced in advance, so that we could propose the schedule of such meetings.

Kraków city with history and future
Krakow, a very interesting location
Krakow has always been famous for its beauty, charm and culture. It is the second largest and one of the oldest cities in Poland, dating back to the 7th century. The Wawel Royal Castle, the Main Market Square and Cloth Hall, St. Mary’s Church, and the Jewish district Kazimierz are only few of the many famous attractions. The city has traditionally been one of the leading centers of Polish academic, cultural, and artistic life. The world-renowned Jagiellonian University, established in 1364 is located here. With a student population of 170,000, the city has a youthful and energetic vibe. Numerous theatres, museums, galleries, and unusual artistic events are all interesting and worthwhile options for activities in in free time. Krakow is also a city of clubs, cafes and restaurants. Just outside the city a historical Wieliczka Salt Mine with an underground cathedral, included on the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List. Krakow is a remarkable city that should be visited at least once in a lifetime! Access to Krakow is very convenient Krakow’s John Paul II International Airport (code KRK) is the main airport. It is situated in Balice, only 15 km (about ten miles) from the city center, which can be reached by shuttle train to main railway station, bus or taxi. The airport has regular direct flights from all major European cities. The average price for a flight from European countries is around 300-400 Euros.
